tip The young loofah gourd is eaten as a vegetable; the mature fibrous inside can become a loofah sponge. 瓜 (guā) appears in names of melons and gourds. Example: 我买了一根丝瓜 (wǒ mǎi le yì gēn sīguā) = “I bought a loofah gourd.”
